Old Istanbul, located on the historic peninsula, is built on seven hills and is known as Yedi Tepe, or the “City of Seven Hills.” This tradition was inherited from Byzantine Constantinople, which was deliberately built on seven hills to echo the seven hills of Rome.
Istanbul is a fascinating city with two sides. On one side is the Asian district, called ‘Asya’ or ‘Anadolu Yakası’, while on the other is the European district, called ‘Avrupa Yakası’. The two sides are separated by the Bosphorus, the strait connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. With a population of more than 15 million, Istanbul attracts visitors from around the world.
