Old Istanbul, located on the historic peninsula, is built on seven hills and is known as Yedi Tepe, or “The City of Seven Hills.” This title was inherited from Byzantine Constantinople, which was deliberately constructed on seven hills to mirror the seven hills of Rome.
Istanbul is a fascinating city with two faces. On one side is the Asian district, called ‘Asya’ or ‘Anadolu Yakası’, located where the Anatolian Peninsula meets the Balkan Peninsula. On the other side is the European district, called ‘Avrupa Yakası’, situated between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. The city has a population of over 15 million people, and it attracts tourists from all around the world.
Over the past 10 years, the number of tourists has increased by 66%, and in 2023, an impressive 17,037,000 tourists visited Istanbul.
